(2/49 = 224 E. Main St – Beacon NY)
(5/54 = 10 W. 91st St, #8– NYC (Madole home) and POB 137)
Founded 1945 as Animist Party. Had 35-75 members with about 28 in New Jersey
FBI SAC Letter 54-30 (6/15/54), Section L:
“The NRP was founded in 1948 by James H. Madole of Beacon NY and has been described by reliable sources as a neo-nazi, anti-semitic, and nationalist organization…The Bureau is in receipt of information indicating that as a result of the recent U.S. Supreme Court decision banning segregation in schools a member of the NRP was instructed to incite riots by white students in the South. This member was also instructed to contact the Columbians to determine whether firearms are available. It is noted that the Columbians, a terrorist-type organization, is now defunct and has been cited by the Attorney General pursuant to Executive Order 10450. In view of the possibility the NRP may expand it activities, particularly in the South by affiliation with Ku Klux Klan-type organizations, all offices should be alert for any information indicating this organization is involved in racial disturbances.”
New York field office included NRP in its annual Thumbnail Sketch file (100-90311) intended for subversive organizations.
1/46 = While senior in Beacon NY High School Madole was leader of “Youth For America”
1/16/49 letter from Madole to “Dear Mac” is on stationery with William F. MacFarland’s address (876 Granite) and identified as NRP “headquarters” in Philadelphia. Madole writes that “200 new people have been registered in the Party books due to the January issue [of NRP Bulletin] so far” and he asks “Mac” for details concerning the “Countess Tolstoy case.”
2/7/50 = According to SAC NYC memo to J. Edgar Hoover, Madole wrote letter to W. Henry MacFarland Jr. stating that NRP “contemplates affiliation with the German-American Republican League. It is recalled that the German-American Republican League has been cited by the Attorney General.” [NYC 105-6112, #233, 2/25/55 SAC NYC to Hoover]
Much of information concerning meetings of NRP came from Detective Leonard Stevenson, Bureau of Special Services, New York Police Department. Stevenson attended many NRP meetings – including street meetings.
1/13/53 = NRP meeting attended by Eustace Mullins
5/1/53 = Street meeting held at 2nd Avenue and 87th Street, 8:15pm, Madole said “he was proud to be a Fascist and a nazi”. Madole stated his heroes were: Father Coughlin, Gen. Douglas MacArthur, Sen. Joseph McCarthy, and Charles Lindbergh.
7/10/53 NRP meeting with Eustace Mullins, Matt Koehl, C. Daniel Kurtz, Joseph Rudden, and Mana Truhill
10/54 and 11/54 = NRP held meetings under name “Patriots For McCarthy” at Cornish Arms Hotel in NYC and other locations
11/54 = West Hooker gave Madole $30 per week for NRP operations. Hooker wanted Madole to change NRP name to United States Nationalist Party but Madole rejected the idea. Madole also rejected Hooker request for NRP mailing list. [Conde McGinley and Edward Fleckenstein also rejected Hooker request for their mailing lists.]
Kurt Mertig was Chairman of New York City NRP as well as Chairman of his own two groups, Citizens Protective League and German American Republican League of Greater New York. The latter two were cited by Attorney General as fascist.
9/55 = When Madole completed his employment app for junior clerk position at L.H. Dommerich & Co., NYC (9/13/55-12/4/57) he listed Kurt Mertig, Alfred Tittmann, and Mrs. Harold Crookes as his references.
Benjamin Freedman provided money to Madole and offered to write articles for the NRP Bulletin. $100 in August 1956 and $90 in November 1956.
In 4/14/56 speech by Madole (at Nola Studios 113 W. 57th St.) he referred to Hitler and Mussolini as “two great martyrs” to their cause. He claimed that Eisenhower was “controlled by Jews and his wife was a Jew” [HQ 105-6112, #456, 7/20/56, SA-NYC summary report on NRP]
Conde McGinley published 3/56 issue of NRP – containing only one article “Shall American Boys Serve As Cannon Fodder For Zionist Aggression in the Holy Land?”
4/56 NRP Bulletin contained two articles by Stanley F. Morse:
“The Pro-Negro Phrase of the Red Revolution in America”
“The Scientific and Historical Basis For Racial Segregation”
5/56 NRP Bulletin articles were written with the assistance of Ben Freedman. One article was a reprint of previous article that declared that Hitler was “the George Washington of Europe” and it contained the following comment: “What Hitler accomplished in Europe, the National Renaissance Party shall yet accomplish in America.” Last page of this Bulletin listed anti-American literature which Madole obtained from Egyptian Office in NYC at no charge – and then sold.
Madole wrote pamphlet, “Democratic Party—Arch Foe of White Civilization in America”. He placed order for 2000 copies with Conde McGinley and 1500 were sent to Realpolitical Institute in Chicago. [NYC 105-6112, #463, 8/6/56 SAC NYC to J. Edgar Hoover]
NYC 105-6112, #unrecorded = SAC Philly to J. Edgar Hoover, 2/17/49 memo reports that in 11/48, Philly came into possession of a letter written by Madole which it sent to HQ 11-15-48 in which Madole wrote to W. Henry MacFarland Jr. that “America is ripe for any form of fascism.”
3/55 NRP Bulletin: Madole article “The Need For Racial Segregation”
12/20/58 = Madole received letter from George Lincoln Rockwell. GLR invited Madole to attend upcoming meeting of National States Rights Party. Madole declined but he told GLR that he would gladly distribute any literature which GLR sent to Madole. GLR sent a pamphlet entitled “White Man, Fight” – which contained pictures of Hitler and GLR. [NYC 105-6112, #722; 1/9/59]
Nov-Dec 1958 issue of NRP Bulletin contains following self-description on masthead: “Official organ of the NRP, devoted to the restoration of the American Republic, the preservation of American Sovereignty and the establishment of an American Regime based on principles of racial nationalism and social justice.”
1958 = John M. Lundoff was NRP member. FBI investigated him in 1958 and determined that he has been member of Association of Georgia Klans. FBI described him as “mentally disturbed person”
2/20/59 = Fred Weiss interviewed by FBI and he stated that he had no contact with Madole or NRP for past 3 years. His stated reason was because he objected to Madole’s position calling for abolition of current form of elections and parliamentary procedures in U.S. [HQ 105-6112, #748; 2/27/59 SA NYC report, page 11]
